The legend of Aleu, I
In medieval times, a traditional game called Choca or Reca was played by Pedro Meneses, a nobleman from Vila Real. When asked by King Dinis about the war against the Moors, the nobleman bravely replied that he would defend the city even with the “aleo” (the stick he played with). Impressed, the King granted governance of Ceuta to Meneses and made the “aleo” a symbol of justice.
Of course, the Alleu flats are located in the heart of the city and the Historic Centre, as central as the ALEU on Vila Real’s coat of arms.
On the doorstep, you’ll find the emblematic Casa Lapão bakery-pastry shop, a centenary daughter of Vila Real, where you can try the conventual Crista de Galo pastry, the Pastel de Santa Clara and many more to accompany your coffee.
Nearby you’ll find the Vila Real Town Hall, the Vila Velha Museum, the historic Portas da Vila, the Capela Nova, the Vila Real Archaeology and Numismatics Museum, among many other places to visit. If you need to do some shopping, there are also supermarkets and shops nearby.
