In medieval times, King Dinis was visiting Vila Real when he came across two young men playing Choca or Reca. When he questioned them about the fact that they were playing instead of training for war, the boys replied that even with the “aleo” (stick they were playing with) they could defeat the enemy just like they do with the reca. Impressed, the King ordered Vila Real’s coat of arms to bear the word “Aleu”.
Of course, the Alleu flats are located in the heart of the city and the Historic Centre, as central as the ALEU on Vila Real’s coat of arms.
On the doorstep, you’ll find the emblematic Casa Lapão bakery-pastry shop, a centenary daughter of Vila Real, where you can enjoy the conventual Crista de Galo pastry, the Pastel de Santa Clara and many more to accompany your coffee.
Nearby you’ll find the Vila Real Town Hall, the Vila Velha Museum, the historic Portas da Vila, the Capela Nova, the Vila Real Museum of Archaeology and Numismatics, among many other places to visit. If you need to do some shopping, there are also supermarkets and shops nearby.
