Your share of the Douro
In the south-east corner of Alijó, in the district of Vila Real, lies the quiet village of Cotas. A wine-growing village in the Douro sub-region, the region’s namesake river flows a mere 15-minute drive from the house.
Marking the border with Bragança is the Douro tributary Tua River, signalling Cotas’ remarkable location in a region rich in mountains, plateaus and valleys. Its proximity to the aforementioned rivers and the Tinhela allows for a diverse geomorphology, also marked by geological variety: granites, quartzite and schists.
These areas are populated by vineyards whose continental climate terroir encourages the vast production and cultivation of, for example, Touriga Nacional and Franca, Tinto Cão (red varieties), Moscatel Galego and Códega do Larinho (white). Typically mature, the wines are the millenary product of this region that is so inviting to wine tourism.
Favaios is part of Alijó. With the famous Moscatel de Favaios and the traditional Pão de Favaios, the table is well set with the region’s enchidos. There you’ll also find, for example, the Favaios, Bread and Wine Museum Centre, the Favaios Cooperative Winery and other places to visit.
Rich in landscapes, the region is characterised by its riverside and inland walks. Miradouro do Ujo and Foz do Tua, for example, are places to consider. In another direction, you can also visit the Pinhão village of vineyards.
