From the Corgo to the Douro
Originating in the district of Vila Real, the river that gives these flats their name is the river that “separates” the city in two and also inspired its growth. Sites such as the Biel Power Station – Portugal’s first hydroelectric power station, built in the 19th century – the stretch of the river nicknamed Rio das Lavandeiras by the locals and the current river beach at the Codessais Complex are just some of the places to consider visiting.
On the doorstep of this cosy flat, you’ll find the emblematic Casa Lapão bakery-pastry shop, a century-old daughter of Vila Real, where you can enjoy the conventual Crista de Galo pastry, the Pastel de Santa Clara and many more to accompany your coffee.
Nearby you’ll find the Vila Real Town Hall, the Vila Velha Museum, the historic Portas da Vila, the Capela Nova, the Vila Real Archaeology and Numismatics Museum, among many other places to visit. If you need to do some shopping, there are also supermarkets and shops nearby.
If you want to follow the river, it flows into the River Douro – as if you needed any more reason to visit this emblematic, historic and extremely important region of Portugal and the world.
